Machines at work

Specification sheets are easy. What matters is what happened on a real site, with a real programme, in real South African conditions. Here are six, with the numbers and the parts that did not go to plan.

Shantui SD32 dozers stripping coal overburden in Mpumalanga Mpumalanga · Mining
Case study 01

4.2 million m³ of overburden in one dry season

A coal contractor near Witbank had eleven months to strip a new block, with a hard stop at the start of the wet season and an availability penalty in the contract.

The fleet: six SD32 dozers, four SE500LC excavators, two SG21 graders and an SR26T compactor, all delivered inside seven weeks with mine-spec guarding and fire suppression fitted before handover.

The support: a full MARC contract with two resident technicians on site, a consignment spares container and 24-hour cover through the peak months.

"Eighteen months and 9 000 hours later the availability is sitting at 94% and the undercarriage came in under budget."

Shantui SG21 graders rebuilding a provincial road in KwaZulu-Natal KwaZulu-Natal · Roads
Case study 02

112 km of provincial road, rebuilt under live traffic

A full-depth rehabilitation on the N11 corridor, carried out in half-width sections with traffic accommodation running throughout, which meant every machine had to be productive in a narrow working width.

The fleet: three SG18-3 graders, four SR20-5 rollers, two SR22MP padfoots on the wet cuttings, and two SE210 excavators on drainage and side works.

The challenge: a mid-contract failure on a competitor grader nearly stopped layer works. We delivered a replacement SG18 on hire within 26 hours and it stayed on the job to completion.

Shantui pipelayers installing a bulk water main across the Karoo Northern Cape · Pipeline
Case study 03

68 km bulk water main across the Karoo

A municipal bulk water scheme, four hundred kilometres from the nearest equipment dealer, on a route with no cellular coverage for long stretches and gravel access only.

The fleet: three SP-series pipelayers, two SE245LC excavators on trench, an SD16 on access roads and an SL50W on stringing and materials.

The support model: a dedicated field service unit and technician stationed on the project for the full contract duration, with a consignment spares trailer holding filters, hoses, seals and GET.

Three shorter stories

Shantui wheel loaders working a Western Cape aggregates quarry

Two loaders replaced three

An aggregates producer near Malmesbury was running three ageing loaders on primary feed. Cycle-time analysis showed two correctly specified SL60W units, with rock buckets and on-board weighing, would beat the three on throughput, and did, at 31% lower fuel cost per tonne.

Landfill-spec Shantui dozer working a municipal waste cell

A landfill machine that lasted

A metro landfill was destroying a standard dozer every eighteen months to wire wrap and radiator blockage. A landfill-spec SD16 with trash guarding, sealed compartments and a reversing fan has now passed 6 000 hours with no radiator-related downtime.

Plant hire fleet of Shantui excavators in the Western Cape

Utilisation is the only metric

A Bellville plant hire business bought four SL60W loaders and two SE210 excavators. Two years on they are the highest-utilised units in a mixed-brand fleet of forty, and operator training cut measured fuel burn across the whole fleet.
